Amanda Layne Stephens was born and raised in Huntington, West Virginia, were she later earned her Bachelors of Arts in English in 2008 and Master of Arts in English in 2010 at Marshall University. After teaching college English at Marshall University for a year, she moved to Bloomington, Indiana, to attend law school at Indiana University Maurer School of Law. During law school, she volunteered for Maurer Law's domestic violence law school group and Planned Parenthood of Indiana and served as a legal observer of student strikes as part of her service work for the National Lawyer's Guild. She graduated with a J.D. and minor in Gender Studies in May 2014.

Because of passion for social justice and women's rights in particular, Ms. Stephens decided to seek admission into the State of Bar of Indiana and then pursue a PhD in Gender Studies at Indiana University. After obtaining admission into the Indiana Bar in October 2014, she volunteered for the District 10 Pro Bono Project where she legally assisted impoverished Indiana residents while working on her PhD. Her doctoral research focuses on women's organizations in northern India that advocate for vulnerable populations. After completing her Fulbright-Nehru Student Research Grant in 2018 in Jaipur,  India, she moved back to Indiana where she practiced general civil litigation at Ferguson Law in Bloomington, Indiana.

Along with her husband and two dogs, Ms. Stephens moved to sunny San Antonio, Texas, in the summer of 2019 and then joined Valdez & Treviño, first as a law clerk, and currently as an associate attorney. Her practice focuses on insurance litigation defense in lawsuits arising from automobile accidents, personal injuries, and property damage. She spends her weekends enjoying San Antonio's beautiful parks and completing her dissertation. She expects to graduate with her PhD in May 2021.
